Ragnar Spotlight Athlete: Iron Cowboy, James Lawrence

Whoa, guys, we are stoked for you to meet James Lawrence aka the Iron Cowboy! The list of his accomplishments is mega long, and getting longer as we speak… He is currently out to accomplish the “impossible,” conquer 100 triathlons in 100. CONSECUTIVE. DAYS! Talk about epic. He took a few minutes out of his incredible journey to answer a few questions.

Q: Conquer 100 is 100 Triathlons in 100 days. You started March 1 and still have quite a way to go. How are you feeling, emotionally and physically at this point, and aside from testing human endurance, what are you hoping Conquer 100 does?

“In the beginning, I worried that I had bit off more than I could chew because it had been a while since I had done a full-distance triathlon. As time passed and I kept putting one foot in front of the other, we found our rhythm as a team, and I found my rhythm as the Iron Cowboy. Now it’s like clockwork and I am perfectly miserable. I am hoping that the Conquer 100 empowers other people to push their limits, even if they have already done great things in life!”

Q: What motivates you to keep going when things get tough?

“Knowing that all I need to do is be perfect for one second. Then one more second. Then one more second.”

Q: If you had to pick one love, what is it: Swimming, Biking…or Running? Which one was your first love?

“Biking is my love and first love. But during the Conquer 100, I find myself loving the swims.”

Q: “What goes through your head when you’re out there just grinding day after day? Do you listen to music?”

“I do listen to music. I think about my family, our life together, and how great our lives will be in the future. It helps me remember why I am doing everything that I do.”

Q: What would you tell someone who is just starting to train and the road to the finish line feels daunting?

“Patience, and one step at a time. Just like in my circumstance, I can’t focus on 100 full-distance triathlons… I can only focus on taking the next step.”

Q: Your endurance and athletic resilience are impressive. You’re a role model for many out there, but who inspires you?

“Georges St. Pierre… and always my wife, Sunny.”

Q: Now, we have to ask…if you were to run a Ragnar race, who would you pick to be on your team?

“Dwayne Johnson, The Ultimate Warrior, Superman.”

Q: You’re starting every day at 5:30 AM and not wrapping up until close to 7:30 PM. How do you fuel your body and stay healthy?

“First of all, it’s not 7:30 because I’ve been walking. I have been finishing between 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm. but some nights have been as late as 12. It is important for me to use my Xlear Nasal Spray every time I get out of the water before heading into the bike. I am conscious of getting highly nutritious foods between high chews and Swedish fish! I love my 1st Phorm products to stay fueled!”

Q: We know you’re in the midst of Conquer 100, but what’s next after 100? Where will the Iron Cowboy go next?

“If I told you I’d have to kill you! Oh, but I am going to Mexico with my family.”

Again, a huge shout out to James, the Iron Cowboy. Follow his adventures to Conquer 100 HERE!
